PDF is OUT / Native Print is IN

Due to security concerns and server hardening on the 'cloud' (where we are hosted), our host has imposed stricter security settings for our server, resulting in the inability to leverage the PDF generation component we had been leaning on for printing. So, we have redeveloped the code for the Handicap Card and Peer Review pages to allow for direct printing. What does this mean for you, the member...not much. Everything still functions pretty much as it did before. Your handicap card should print out just like it used to -- even better, with crisper graphics.

So please let us know if you eperience any difficulties. Thanks for your patience.

NEW YORKERS: Bethpage Resolved

I have taken the time to correct, migrate and consolidate the absolute MESS that was our database version of Bethpage. Please note, that contrary to popular belief, Bethpage is NOT in Bethpage, NY. If you actually look at the printed scorecards or visit their webpage, you'll notice that their street address is actually in Farmingdale, NY -- which is where you will find it, from now on. Please, for the love of God, do not re-add this course in Bethpage, NY. Thanks in advance.

A code change to a stored procedure in the database, temporarily made it impossible to add a new course to the database yesterday. This has been fixed and all is functioning as expected.

"N/A" : What's up with my buddy handicap?

Many of you have written in wondering why some (or all) of your buddies' handicaps are reading as "n/a", on your Buddies page. We hear ya, and this is NOT by accident. Let me explain...

There are <i>many</i> new and exciting features and enhancements in this version of Digital Divot. Many of the new features required changes to how the data for a given member is stored in the database. When we migrated our huge member database from the old server to the new one, we had to set all members current handicap to a state of "pending". Members with pending handicaps will have their entire handicap history automatically reconciled, upon their very next log-in to Digital Divot. Once their handicap history has been "bounced" or reconciled, their handicap will be current and will be available to YOUR buddy list (and peer review, for that matter).

What does this mean? It means your buddies haven't logged into Digital Divot version 6 yet! So, go rattle their cages and have them log in. The "n/a" issue will magically disappear...

Digital Divot v6 Released

Hey Divoteers...the moment has finally come. Digital Divot version 6, is live. We believe this release version to be quite stable, but are going to consider the next week as a <i>Beta</i> period. Please put Digital Divot through it paces and let us know if you find anything amiss. While we have tested this new version heavily; there is always the possibility that something slips through the cracks. We have been in the development business to know that there is no such thing a "bullet-proof code". (but like to think we are as close as it gets)

We are looking forward to hearing all member accolades, questions, comments and concerns. Please do not hesitate to contact us.

Well...the Salt Mines Moved

There was a slight slip in the projected timeline. I had to relocate my family, which put a major monkey wrench in the machine. We have moved from New York's beautiful Long Island, to Austin, Texas.

The move is now complete and we are back under the hood. Sorry for the false hope on delivery date, but sometimes life, gets in the way of life. More to come soon.

Report from the Salt Mines

Hey Divoteers!

Sorry it's been so long since our last post -- we have been VERY BUSY. Digital Divot version 6 is getting VERY close. So close, you can almost taste it. And we think you will all be very pleased with our beloved web-app's, new digs and gigs!

Still a couple hurdles to overcome, but we are rounding the 90% completion marker and intial testing of core functionality is underway and looking very promising (read: very few bugs to iron out). While I'm sure we could just continue to evlove our baby and keep growing it via "feature-creep" perpetually, we have issued a code-freeze following the compeltion of approximately 14 remaining items.

I know it seems like an eternity since we started talking about it, but please remember that you will actually be seeing the culmination for TWO versions (v5, was scrapped at about 80% completion to allow for a complete rewrite of the data store). So the experience will be more of a quantum leap, than a freshening or update. We hope you all feel the same way we do about it.

So, what does this all mean? Well, to put it bluntly; if I were a bettin' man, I would say DD v6 is within 'weeks' of launch -- LESS THAN A MONTH. Stay tuned...

The Votes Are In. The Decision is Final!

To all of our Divoteers, all we can say is, "THANK YOU". The response to our last news-item / survey has been overwhelming. We asked for your opinion and boy did we get it!

Of the over 1200+ responses, only 6 (that's right, SIX) voted for the "total-score" method. That is LESS than 1% (0.5%, for those of you reaching for calculators). We hear ya, loud and clear. Everybody wants the more refined and granular approach to their game analysis. Everyone seems to understand that this level of data collection is absolutely essential to the calculation of truly valuable progress assessment. And we couldn't be happier to agree. It is what makes Digital Divot unique and special. There are many other sites out there that use the "total-score" method to calculate a handicap -- but that's it. What's up with that? I can do that on a piece of paper...or in my head. Where's the beef?

So to all of you who responded and even to those that didn't but still continue to use and enjoy our little corner of the web, rest assured. We will not only be retaining the "hole-by-hole" methodology, but we will be expanding on it and extending its functionality, while taking great strides to improve the user experience through streamlining data input and incorporating cutting-edge AJAX technologies to help data validation.

In addition, many of you had absolutely outstanding suggestions for ways to improve our current system. And we are feverishly coding almost all of these suggestions into version 6.0. We really can't wait to share it with you. There are just too many improvements and new features that we really can't go into it at this time. This article is long enough. But know there is a mighty wind brewing. We'll brief you on upcoming features as we get closer.

When is that going to be, you ask? We really wish we could tell you with any level of certainty. We will be taking a decidedly Apple-esque stance on that; "when it's ready". But trust us; we think you will be very pleased. We sure are.

And to those of you that cast your vote for "total-score"...your tribe has spoken.
